Global Takaful Group (GTG) was legally incorporated on 21st May 2007. Prior to this, this group is just an informal grouping of takaful and retakaful operators under the name of ASEAN Takaful Group (ATG). ATG was formed on 28th October 1995 with the objective of enhancing mutual co-operation among takaful operators in Malaysia, Republic of Indonesia, Negara Brunei Darussalam and Republic of Singapore of which the founder members were Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Berhad, Takaful Nasional Sdn Bhd, PT Asuransi Takaful Umum, PT Asuransi Takaful Keluarga, Insurans Islam Taib Sendirian Berhad and Takaful IBB Berhad. The first secretarist of ATG was held by Syarikat Takaful Malaysia, however it was later transferred to Asean Retakaful International (L) Ltd. or 'ARIL' on 7th October 2001 until 28th August 2007. The appointment of ARIL serves to promote more memberships from Muslim countries using its international business contacts. WIth effect from 28th August 2007, the task has been transferred to Labuan Reinsurance (L) Ltd as the Permanent Secretarist. In order to accommodate memberships from outside the ASEAN region, ATG amended its constitution during its 9th Annual Conference in Sri Lanka on 6th October 2003, and formally changed to "Asian Takaful Group". Today it has expanded its membership to thirty-five (35) comprising takaful and retakaful operators from various countries, and continues to receive enquiries from many players around the world.
